CASA of Berks County Welcomes Three New Members to Board of Directors

CASA of Berks County proudly announces the addition of three new members to its Board of Directors following a vote at the organizations Annual Meeting in May 2025. The new board members bring a wealth of professional expertise, personal passion, and deep commitment to CASAs mission of advocating for children who have experienced abuse or neglect.

Jennifer Mehall, Vice President at ASRC Federal, joins the board with a desire to contribute to the direction, mission, and success of CASA Berks. I believe making a meaningful impact on a cause I believe in will provide a sense of personal purpose and positive impact on the lives of the children we serve and support, Mehall said.

Carol Heffner, Regional Director of the Early Learning Resource Center at Community Services for Children, has spent her career serving vulnerable children and families. I wanted to join the Board of Directors because I strongly believe in the work of CASA, Heffner shared. Children are the future, and when they thrive the community thrives. I am excited to share my knowledge and experience to support the amazing work of the CASA volunteers.

Alina Kitchell, Federal Programs Coordinator at Agora Cyber Charter School and a current CASA volunteer, brings firsthand advocacy experience to the board. I am a current CASA who believes in the CASA mission of advocating for children, said Kitchell. It is my hope to help strengthen and grow the CASA program so more kids can be served.

Board President Tim Greusel, Owner of the Quality Enhancement Support Team (QEST), expressed his enthusiasm about the new appointments. I am thrilled to welcome our three newly installed members to the CASA board, said Greusel. Their collective depth of experience and their dedication to the mission of the organization are an invaluable asset. I look forward to working with each new board member as each brings their unique talents and commitment to serve and support the lives of abused and neglected children in the Berks County community.

CASA of Berks County is grateful for the service and dedication of all board members and looks forward to the contributions of its newest leaders as the organization continues to expand its reach and impact in the region. This year, CASA of Berks County proudly celebrates its 10th anniversary. Visit www.casaberks.org to learn more about our 10th anniversary events and how you can get involved.

byNancy McCullar
pictures of therapists counseling youth

Each year, young people in Berks County age out of foster care and step into adulthood without the consistent support many of us take for granted. They face the same challenges every young adult encountershousing, employment, relationships, financesbut often without a stable network of guidance and emotional support.

At CASA of Berks County, we see the resilience of these young adults every day. We also see the gaps.

To help close those gaps, we are launching our Youth in Transition program, designed to provide short-term counseling for young adults who have recently exited foster care. And we are inviting licensed therapists to be part of this critical new initiative.

Why Volunteer Therapists Matter

Young adults aging out of foster care have often spent years navigating systems, instability, and trauma. A safe, reliable therapeutic relationshipeven for a short periodcan help them:

  • Build confidence and emotional stability

  • Strengthen coping skills

  • Navigate significant life decisions

  • Develop healthier relationships

  • Feel supported during an uncertain time

Your clinical training and compassionate presence can be the anchor they need as they move forward.

What the Role Involves

Volunteer therapists provide short-term, trauma-informed counseling tailored to each young adults needs. Sessions can be scheduled based on your availability, and CASA Berks provides structure, support, and coordination throughout the process.

This is a flexible way to offer your professional skills to a population that often struggles to access mental health care.

Who Were Looking For

We are seeking licensed professionals such as:

  • Licensed Professional Counselors (LPC)

  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW)

  • Licensed Marriage & Family Therapists (LMFT)

  • Licensed Psychologists

If you believe every young person deserves someone in their corner, and youre passionate about creating equitable access to care, wed love to talk with you.

We invite interested therapists to attend an upcoming information session or reach out directly to our program coordinator.

Together, we can ensure that no young adult leaving foster care has to take their next steps alone.
